Camp Spik in Slovenia was really a chance find – on the way to Croatia Fred was looking for somewhere to break the journey, and suddenly there was this campsite. The surroundings are impressive: everything deep green and natural, big trees everywhere – and in the background mighty rock faces glowing in the sun. The campsite sits right in the middle of it, the pitches are arranged in circles and it feels like camping in the forest. In summer that is a real advantage, because there is plenty of shade – and the site lies a bit higher up and in a valley, which keeps the temperatures pleasantly cool.
The staff were friendly, the sanitary facilities good, and in the middle there was a nice playground. Since there was not much going on, you could pick your spot freely, and we found a great one. A small stream with crystal clear water runs nearby – ideal for a short walk. We did not make any trips, we only stayed one night on the way there and one on the way back. Hiking, mountain biking, climbing – all of that would be possible, but you would need more time and the right equipment for it.
As a stopover on the way to Croatia, Camp Spik is hard to beat and we would stop here again any time. For a longer stay you would have to arrive with bikes and hiking plans on purpose – but that could be worth it too.
