Lake Neusiedl had been on our list for a long time – known as an unusually shallow, wide lake, and thanks to the thermals also a popular kitesurfing spot. So in July 2022 we drove the roughly four hours there and settled in at Strandcamping Podersdorf. You can find all the details about the campsite on their own website:
For us it was also the first week in which our self-built Battery box was properly in use – together with the solar panel we had on the car roof back then. A whole week off-grid, cool box and devices supplied: that was exactly what we had built it for, and it delivered.
On the first weekend we explored the area. What we liked most were the walks along the wide promenade – that was really lovely. And pizza: quiet, relaxed and exactly the right mix of something going on, but not too much. The campsite is right on the lake, there is plenty of space and a pleasant atmosphere with nice people.
The water quality was poor, though. At that time the lake was suffering badly from a lack of water, so the water was warm and murky, and dead fish were floating on the surface. Swimming was not really an option. During the week Fred at least got a few windy days and could enjoy the lake while kiting.
At the end of the week our friends from Vienna came by – together we walked to the nearby lighthouse, watched the sunset and fought for the survival of the gas cooker in a gale. Fun for everyone. We would definitely go back, hopefully when the lake is in better shape.
Update 2024: The solar panel on the car roof broke later on. We replaced it with the foldable solar suitcase from Renogy – the battery box itself still runs unchanged to this day.
