On the way back from Pag we skipped the ferry and took the longer route overland. We actually wanted to stay by the coast once more, and did what we often do and only started looking for a campsite on the same day. Down by the road, right on the sea, there were several of them – we drove up to two, and both were full. Really every metre taken, everything very tight, and the noisy road on top of that. We did not want to stay there.
On Google Maps we then saw that there was another option up in the mountains, maybe ten minutes away. Fred drove, because the route was again nothing for Susi's nerves: winding, narrow, small roads. At some point we more or less found the place.
There was nothing going on at all. At first we could not even get in properly, until at some point somebody came walking over – probably just someone who was visiting. The site is certainly not run professionally, it worked more along the lines of "park somewhere and pay". No shop, no reception, there was a toilet, a wash basin and maybe a shower. But plenty of space, stones, trees and a nice view of the mountains.
A few locals live around it, and we walked around the area a bit. We never quite warmed to the surroundings, though: everything rather deserted and bare, and in some places the way was simply blocked off and you could not go on. A slightly eerie feeling, even in broad daylight. For one night that was completely fine and still better than squeezing in down by the road – but it was strange.
On the site itself, on the other hand, it was really relaxed. We hung up the hammock, from a tree to the Caddy's roof rail, and tried it out once. Otherwise it was tailgate kitchen open and cooking something – there was not much left to choose from, since we could not do any shopping up here. It was enough anyway.
None of this was spectacular, it was a simple stopover. But that was exactly what fit: quiet, nobody around, away from all the tourist bustle. From here we drove back, with a last stop at Camp Spik, because it is simply nicely placed along the way. After that just home – that was the end of our Croatia trip.
Update 2026: The site now has its own website, can be booked online and advertises renovated sanitary facilities, among other things. So it is probably no longer as deserted as it was for us.
